WordPress or Drupal?

May 24, 2023

When you’re building a website, choosing the right platform is crucial. There loads of options but the two that stand out are WordPress and Drupal. While both platforms have their good points we think that WordPress is nearly always the right answer. Here’s why.

It’s easy to use
One of the main reasons why WordPress is the better choice for a new website is that it is incredibly user-friendly. WordPress has an intuitive, user-friendly interface that makes it easy for even the most technologically challenged user to create a website. On the other hand, Drupal has a steep learning curve, and the platform is geared more towards developers and advanced users.

Limitless customisation
As site developers, we want a platform that lets us build the sites that our clients want. A platform that lets us implement our best design work and doesn’t hold us or our customers back in any way. Having spent more years than we care to acknowledge working with both platforms, we’re more than happy to say that WordPress has never limited us or our customers – it’s always allowed us to build the functionality our clients need and let us do so in a way that’s elegant and effective. Building a Drupal site, on the other hand, is more like trying to knit a jumper while wearing boxing gloves.

SEO
Search engine optimization (SEO) is essential for any website that wants to rank well on search engines like Google. Fortunately, WordPress has built-in SEO features that make it easy for users to optimise their website for search engines. Drupal, on the other hand, requires a lot of technical expertise to properly optimize for SEO, which can be a challenge for users who are not experienced in this area.

Security
Security is a significant concern for any website owner. WordPress is known for its robust security features, with regular updates that fix security vulnerabilities and a vast library of security plugins that can be installed to enhance website security. Drupal is also a secure platform, but it is not as user-friendly when it comes to security, and it’s a more complex and technical process to properly secure a Drupal website.

Community Support
WordPress has a vast and active community of users and developers who create and share resources, offer support, and collaborate on the platform’s development. This community support makes it easy for users to find solutions to problems and learn new skills. Drupal also has a community of users and developers, but it is not as extensive as the WordPress community, and finding support may be more challenging.

Cost
WordPress is a free and open-source platform, which means that users can use it without paying any licensing fees. Additionally, many WordPress themes and plugins are available for free, which can save users a lot of money. Drupal is also free and open-source, but the platform’s complexity may require users to invest in professional services, which can be costly.

What do we think?
We think that WordPress is the better choice for a new website. It’s easy to use, customizable, SEO-friendly, secure, and supported by a vast community. While Drupal has its strengths, it is not as user-friendly or customisable as WordPress, and it may require more technical expertise to use properly. So, if you’re building a new website, choose WordPress for a platform that is reliable, flexible, and user-friendly.
